Meta Platforms has unveiled a partnership with horror film production company Blumhouse — known for its movie franchises Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious — to test its latest AI video tool.
The program, known as Movie Gen, uses short prompts and still images to create videos in 1080p HD format with sound. However, the tool is still limited to 16-second clips and will not be available widely for Instagram users until 2025, according to Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg.
American director and screenwriter Aneesh Chaganty shared a demo short film i h8 ai which can be viewed on Meta’s Movie Gen site and on YouTube.
Initial responses have been favorable with screenwriters seeing Movie Gen as a way to offer a visual treatment of a story idea before writing the entire script.
“Artists are, and forever will be, the lifeblood of our industry,” Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, said in a statement. “Innovation and tools that can help those artists better tell their stories is something we are always keen to explore, and we welcomed the chance for some of them to test this cutting-edge technology and give their notes on its pros and cons while it’s still in development.”
Meta stock (Nasdaq: META) briefly spiked to $629 a share before settling at $576 a share to end the week.
